Onions and Garlic

It is just about time to harvest the Garlic and Onions. You can easily tell when they are ready because their tops die off and topple over. So if your soil is very loose, you can just pull them up. But if you try and they don't want to come so easily, just grab a spade, and gently stick it in the dirt aiming for under the roots and loosen the dirt around them up a bit.
Garlic is ready.
Brush off any loose soil that remains on them and set them out in the sun to dry for a few days. Leaving their tops on. If it is going to rain be sure to bring them in so that they do not get wet.

If you have a lot of onions or garlic harvested at the same, then you can braid them together, adding in a new onion on each side like a french braid. Then you can hang them in a cool dry place and use as needed. They store very well. Use the ones that start having sunken spots first, and check them often. You do not want one to go bad, and start spoiling the rest of them. Make sure they have air flow around them as this will help them to not get moldy.
