Raw spring rolls
About 3 years ago, my three sisters, one of my sister-in-laws and I participated in the Sisters Weekend in St. Charles, Illinois. My oldest sister lives in a nearby community, so we crashed at her place and did all the fun stuff during the day -- seminars, a cocktail party, wine tasting, concert. It was a lot of fun.
Another fun activity we took part in was a cooking demonstration at Thai Zie in St. Charles. However, the demonstration didn't involve cooking at all. Our host and the restaurant owner, Champ, taught us how to make raw spring rolls. We filled them with a variety of items - shredded carrots, sprouts, shrimp, chicken. It was quite fun, although no matter how hard we tried we couldn't get them to look quite as pretty as Champ's version. He's had quite a bit more experience than any of us, though, so we chalked it up to being beginners. They tasted just fine, but the appearance just wasn't great. After our demo we stayed and had lunch - doing like we sisters normally do - ordering a bunch of different dishes and trying a little of everything All the dishes we tried were awesome.
On a visit to Seasons 52 for a media dinner, I was pleased to see those raw spring rolls pop up - again, much prettier than what I attempted to make. :) See...look at the picture below. This is what they are supposed to look like. Fortunately, I didn't document in photographs the sorry looking job we did. And I loved the variety of sauces that accompanied the rolls at Seasons 52, from mild to zesty. Try them out if they happen to be on the menu when you're there!
Have you ever made raw spring rolls? How did yours turn out.
