Bread for the Journey
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming
from tender stem hath sprung!
of Jesse’s lineage coming,
as those of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright,
amid the cold of winter,
when half spent was the night.
Isaiah ’twas foretold it,
the Rose I have in mind;
Mary we behold it,
the Virgin Mother kind.
To show God’s love aright,
she bore to us a Savior,
when half spent was the night.
O Flower, whose fragrance tender
With sweetness fills the air,
Dispel with glorious splendour
The darkness everywhere;
True man, yet very God,
From sin and death now save us,
And share our every load.
Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming is a song often heard during the advent season. It was originally written in 1599 in Cologne, Germany...inspired by the prophecy of Isaiah. Several hundred years later it was translated into English.
This carol takes me back to my childhood...where I heard it sung by choirs in both German and English and playing from the old hi-fi stereo next to the Christmas tree during the Christmas season. What a beautiful picture! Christ is portrayed as the rose who has come to bring us beauty in our winter and light in our darkness. He is our 'forever-blooming' rose!
