H is for House Plants

Even though I garden, I am certainly not a green thumb. In my home, you will find a few potted plants sitting around, but I tend to do everything wrong: overwater, underwater, too much sun, not enough sun. I just can't seem to get it right. There is one plant that I have never killed and seems to thrive no matter its condition: pothos. 

Pothos, or devil's ivy, is an easy to care for houseplant that thrives in low-light conditions and doesn't require a great amount of watering. They climb and fill-out quite nicely. I have a few of these plants around my home, and they seem to do well in a variety of environments. Even if I forget to water and the plants wilt, they perk right back up within a few hours with a little bit of water. 

I want to share with you a few care instructions for these hardy plants that are done on a monthly basis (except watering, which is done on a weekly basis).

1. Remove any dead leaves. 

2. Using a damp rag, wipe off any dust from the leaves. 

3. My mom bought me this amazing plant polish. Spray this on, and the plants look so shiny!

 

4. Water the plants until the soil is moist. Be sure not to overwater. If water flows out of the pot into the saucer, you've added too much water. I generally water my plants once/week. 

This is a great plant to propagate as well. Simply snip one of the vining stems where there is a little nub (this is where roots will develop), and submerge the stem in a cup of water. After a few weeks when the plant forms roots, move the plant to a pot with soil.

So if you aren't a green thumb but you would like a bit of foliage around the house, pothos may be the plant for you!
