Z is for Zig-Zag Stitch

I conclude the A to Z Challenge by giving you Z is for Zig-Zag Stitch. The zig-zag stitch is a wonderful machine stitch that I use for practical as well as decorative purposes.

I use a basic Singer sewing machine, and most basic machines are similar. My machine has a couple types of zig-zag stitches, but I mainly use basic zig-zag stitch (See picture on left: second row from the top, first setting on the left).

The length and width of the zig-zag stitch can be adjusted based upon  your need or preference. The two sliding knobs on the bottom adjust the length (top) and width (bottom).

See the settings on the picture below for creating a longer, wider stitch:

Here is an example of a shorter, narrower stitch:

For practical purposes, I use the zig-zag stitch when hemming pants After I cut the pants to length and before I hem, I run a zig-zag stitch around the edge of the pants to prevent the edge of the pants from fraying. You could use this technique on any project that you would like to prevent the edge from fraying. 

For decorative purposes, I use the zig-zag stitch to applique. Check out my A is for Applique post for a few examples. As I mentioned above, you can adjust the length and width of the stitch to your liking.
